How I work

What Methods Do I Use?

The methods I use integrate a variety of therapeutic approaches.  I believe that anything less would not honor the complexity of modern life, and the uniqueness of your individual situation.  I choose different ways of working in each session in a flexible way.  By checking in on what's working and what's not, your feedback allows for a customized approach just right for you.

The toolbox available includes cognitive-behavioral approaches, relational therapy, mindfullness and stress management, trauma resolution, spiritual counselling, and others.  The tool chosen is based on what our work together reveals is the best path to follow, and what you find most helpful.

Here are some examples of how we might work:

cognitively and emotionally exploring faulty thinking and belief patterns that you inherited but aren't serving you anymore
deeply listening to your background and current situation to help untangle confusion and overwhelm
using powerful mindfulness and stress reduction techniques to get the most powerful pharmacy (the brain-body system) working in your favor
explaining psychology models so you know WHY something is happening (i.e. you are not crazy!) and HOW you can change in everyday life
providing deep relational support to heal old wounds, and find ways to get your needs met in your life
creating your unique list steps to lower stress - research shows that our brains work MUCH better and solutions are much easier to find
practical approaches for improving communication and resolving conflicts in your relationships
acting as a sounding board and place to practice new behaviors or thinking patterns

Their overall intention is to make meaning of your life and to generate positive change.  This allows me to treat you as an individual and offer great flexibility in problem solving.  Your goals are my primary concern, and I create a customized plan for each client.  What does that look like?  We talk, we process material in your life, we create a plan.  You leave each session empowered while knowing that I am supporting you along the way.

A holistic approach to counselling means that you receive help that works for you.  I take advantage of trusted counselling approaches and my thinking is grounded in the most recent mental health and well-being research in neuroscience and other integrative therapeutic frameworks.

Education and Awareness Building

- the building block of change is the ability to see what needs to change

- I share information with clients make book recommendations and in general encourage you to take responsibility for your life by educating

- over the last 10-20 years the fields of neuropscyhology and mind-body medicine have opened up an integrated view of how the mind and human experience is structured.  we are finally moving beyond piece meal approaches based on clinical outcome and instead being able to see the human body and mind in how it actually functions

- examples of simple models I share are the nervous system, how stress and memory are related, how we internalize relationships, etc.
